Liz earned a B.A. in Neuroscience and Behavior, summa cum laude, from Columbia University - Barnard College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Upon graduation, she decided to pursue her passion for the sciences and teaching others by joining Teach For America where she also earned a Masters of Teaching in Secondary Science at Pace University. Liz went on to spend nine years teaching high-school science in New York City and Chicago. She loved the ability to form positive relationships with her students and to help them grow the key skills they would need for their life in college and beyond, but grew frustrated by the limitations of her role.
As she looked to transition out of the classroom, Liz hoped to put the skills she had built teaching into practice in a new career. At this same time, Tom Alf, the founder of Clerestory Advisors and Liz's father, was looking to bring on support for the growing practice. Liz began working with him in the summer of 2015 which was the start of her journey to become a CFP® and eventual owner of the firm. In her initial role at the firm, she enjoyed providing support to clients while learning the business. As her education and experience grew, she was eager to expand her role at the firm and help set the vision for the future. Tom officially retired and transitioned the firm to Liz in July 2022 and she has loved the transition to business owner as well as continuing her work as a lead advisor to clients.
Liz lives in St. Paul, MN with her husband Scott, sons Lucas and Peter, and their dog Jack. They enjoy taking advantage of all the Twin Cities has to offer- especially the food and outdoors! They love to eat at Estelle’s for date nights, Centro when they're out with the boys and grab coffee at Yellowbird. They also take advantage of the beautiful local parks and river area with walks in Hidden Falls Regional Park and playing at various pools and splash pads across the area.
Joe earned a B.A in Finance, with a focus on Financial Planning, from the University of Minnesota Duluth. Following his graduation from UMD, Joe moved to Washington DC to start his career in financial planning. While in DC, Joe learned the ins-and-outs of fee-only financial advice and further developed his analytical and problem-solving skills. He passed the Certified Financial Planning (CFP®) exam in 2016 and earned the CFP® designation in 2017. After an incredible three years, Joe left DC to travel the US and Asia before eventually settling back down in his home state of Minnesota. He is proud to join Clerestory Advisors in 2022 and continue providing excellent, informative, and unbiased financial advice.
While Joe credits his college advisor with leading him towards the CFP Board Certified Financial Planning minor, his interest in the field began at a much earlier age as he watched his parents work out the family budget at the kitchen table. Joe believes understanding your finances allows you to approach life full of confidence, ready to take advantage of exciting opportunities and achieve your goals. He is passionate about helping others understand and feel in control of their finances.
Joe recently moved to Minneapolis (near Eat Street) and has kept himself busy exploring nearby neighborhoods, lakes, and a plethora of restaurants. He is always happy to hear a recommendation for a great donut, rich cup of coffee, or delicious restaurant.
